Rings vs.
Barbell
Barbells / curves:
can be sized with room for swelling in basically any piercing.
Easy to downsize later or switch to a larger size to accommodate unanticipated swelling.
User friendly insert and removal.
Wide variety of options for the ends of the jewelry.
Generally easier to hide for work.
Rings:
Generally you only want to take up no more than a third of the diameter of the ring inside a fresh piercing.
Rings should be annealed to allow for easy insertion and removal. But anytime you bend a piece of metal after it has been polished you will cause minor surface imperfections along the bend even if you do it by hand.
cost effective due to ease of manufacturing over a barbell
Rings often get flipped up and down causing scar formations, migration, rejection, especially in cartilage or drag in dried lymphatic secretions back into the piercing causing irritation.
Certain sizes of rings (gauge and diameter) must be installed with tools which also generally causes damage to the surface finish of the jewelry. As well as causing you to reuse a device which if possible I try to eliminate.
Circular barbells:
same issues as with rings except now there is a gap for things to slide in and get caught on.
Easy to adjust sizing by opening up the gap between the ends for larger wearing diameter.
Basic Guideline for jewelry
Surface Finish:
Mirror finish crucial in cutting down on lymphatic secretions adhering to jewelry.
There should not be machining marks, tool marks, scratches, scuffs, etc.
Rounded Ends:
Allows for easy insertion especially .. outs during downsizing.
Counter sink:
necessary so there is not a gap between the post and the ball.
Secure fitting
a piercing isn't any good if when they leave it falls out because the jewelry didn't have a secure fitting always check prior to insertion.
ASTM Implant Specs / Biocompatible
always make sure the material you are using is safe for long term wear in the human body.
This generally cuts down on most piercings that are problematic. Or at least allow you to be that much closer to trouble shooting a healing issue.
Annealing
allows for easier bending of the metal in a ring or nostril screw.
Appropriate end selection
using ends that are too small can lead to the piercing becoming embedded during the swelling.
Using ends that are to large can cause the piercing to get caught on things more regularly. They can also cause migration rejection issues due to the weight.
Putting ends with sharp edges can dig into the piercing. They also can get caught on clothing etc causing the piercing to be damaged or the jewelry removed.
No sharp edges
sharp edges can often be found on the ends of external and internally threaded posts especially on lower quality jewelry.
Threading
internal threading is obviously going to be ideal. Especially on downsize change outs, or accidental removal requiring reinsertion.
Dont compromise quality and safety to save a few dollars. We only pierce with the best jewelry available internally threaded implant grade steel and titanium jewelry as well as gold niobium and glass. Experience is worth the price dont trust your safety and well being to an unexperienced piercer.
